If in doubt, put the kettle on
Welcome to the flat: a short guide for new flatmates, from Oliver.
I have lived here for five years, and I therefore know which things are broken, which things only look broken, and which things are broken but refuse to stop working.
Please read it before you touch anything. Please also keep it, because although it is short, it is the only document in the flat that is entirely accurate.
Your room is the smallest in the flat, but it has a window, a bed and a door that closes, which is more than the wardrobe can say. In my experience that is all a person needs during the first week.
First of all, the stairs. There are two flights, and they are narrow. The top step makes a noise like a small animal, so if you come home late, please step over it, unless you want the whole building to know what time it is.
Secondly, the front door. In wet weather, which in London means most of the time, it sticks. Lift the handle a little as you turn the key, and do not kick it, because the family downstairs will hear you.
Next, the kitchen, where the kettle is the most important object in the flat. It may be used at any hour, provided that the person who switches it on offers a cuppa to everybody else at home.
You may use any of my forty or so mugs, except the grey one. That one is mine, and I will notice immediately if it moves.
The wifi password is on the fridge, on the back of a menu from the chippy. It is long, it has no capital letters, and I have never once typed it right the first time.
Whether the milk goes into the tea first or last is a question on which British families have disagreed for generations. I will not be taking sides before ten o'clock in the morning.
At the other end of the kitchen, the sofa belongs to everyone, whereas the remote control for the telly belongs to whoever is holding it. Nobody has ever managed to change that rule, and I have stopped trying.
Because the flat is above the chippy, it smells of chips from noon until closing time. Your clothes will smell of chips as well, and although you will stop noticing within a week, your colleagues may need a little longer.
On Fridays, Mrs Demir, whose family runs the chippy, gives us a discount on fish and chips, which is generous. However, the queue on the pavement is always longest at the exact moment when you are most hungry, and I have no solution to that.
A note on language: in this flat we say lift, pavement, jumper and crisps. An American who says elevator, sidewalk, sweater and chips will be corrected, first with a smile and then without one.
Everybody in this country will say sorry if you step on their foot. You should say sorry back, because the conversation is not really about whose foot it was.
If anything in the flat stops working, please tell me at once, even if it seems small. Small problems here have a habit of becoming large ones at midnight.
I am usually in the kitchen between eight in the morning and midnight. However, if I am not in the kitchen, I am probably teaching online in my room, in which case please wait until the lesson has finished, unless the kettle is on fire.
If in doubt, put the kettle on. It has never made anything worse, and in this flat it has solved most things.
